Humidity control

Mushroom farm humidification: keeping the crop in the right band

Oyster, shiitake or button — the crop decides the band, and the band decides whether pinning happens on schedule.

Why fine mist, not steam or sprinklers

Steam humidification is energy-hungry and adds heat the crop may not want. Sprinklers wet the beds and the crop surface. High-pressure fogging at 1–15 μm raises humidity evenly through the room without touching the beds — which is also why it can be combined with cooling in the same room.

Room-by-room control is not a luxury

Mushroom houses almost always run several rooms at different stages, and each stage wants different humidity.

  • Separate zones per room, each on its own humidity sensor
  • Fruiting rooms held in a tight band; incubation rooms treated differently
  • Automatic back-off during harvest or when doors open
  • Alarm or dry-run protection so the pump never runs with an empty tank

What we need to quote

Room dimensions and count, current humidity readings, water source (bore hole water often needs filtration), power supply and whether cooling is also wanted. The quotation states nozzle count per room, zoning, pump size, filtration and the expected consumption (published 3–8 L/min).

Published specifications used in this guide

Droplet size1–15 μm
Working pressure70–100 bar
Coverage500–10,000 m² per system

Questions

Common questions — Humidity control

Can one pump serve several growing rooms?

Yes, with solenoid zoning — each room is controlled independently and only the rooms that need misting draw water. This is the usual configuration on commercial farms.

Is borehole water suitable?

Often, with filtration. Mineral content and iron in particular will block fine nozzles, so we specify the inlet filtration and a cleaning interval; for very hard water pre-treatment is recommended.

Will it cool as well as humidify?

Yes. Evaporation absorbs heat, so a fogging system also reduces room temperature — which is why many farms specify it for both.
