Humidity control

Holding humidity in a greenhouse: what to specify

Humidity is not one number to hold — it is a band to keep, and getting it wrong shows up as leaf disease or stalled growth.

Think in bands, not set points

Plants want humidity that moves with temperature — the practical control variable is vapour pressure deficit, not a fixed relative humidity figure. A system that holds 70% RH regardless of temperature will be too wet in the morning and too dry at midday. Controllers driven by temperature and humidity sensors, adjusting each zone, are what make fogging useful rather than risky.

Droplet size decides whether you help or hurt the crop

Fogging at 1–15 μm evaporates in the air and raises humidity without wetting leaves. Coarser spray deposits water on foliage, and prolonged leaf wetness is the classic route to fungal disease. This is the single specification that matters most, and it is why high-pressure systems are used instead of low-pressure nozzles.

What we need to design it

Please send: greenhouse dimensions and type, crop, target humidity or VPD band, ventilation arrangement, water source and quality, and power available. We return nozzle layout by bay, zoning, filtration specification and consumption figures (published 3–8 L/min), with a control package that follows plant demand through the day.

Published specifications used in this guide

Droplet size1–15 μm
Working pressure70–100 bar
Unit power1.5–7.5 kW
Coverage500–10,000 m²
Water consumption3–8 L/min
Controlhumidity-linked sensors, multi-zone

Figures are our published specification ranges (or general market conditions where stated). Final configuration is confirmed per project in the written quotation.

Questions

Common questions — Humidity control

Will fogging increase disease pressure?

Not if droplets are 1–15 μm and ventilation moves the mist. Disease risk comes from leaf wetness, which coarse spray causes and fine mist does not.

Can it cool the greenhouse at the same time?

Yes — the same evaporation that raises humidity absorbs heat. In dry climates growers often specify fogging for both humidity and summer cooling.

Hard water — is it a problem?

It is the main maintenance risk. A 5 μm inlet filter and a cleaning interval are specified with every greenhouse system; where water is very hard we also recommend pre-treatment.
