Poultry cooling in African heat: Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and beyond

In much of Africa the difference between a good season and a bad one is how the sheds perform in the four hottest weeks of the year.

Inland heat is the favourable case

Dry inland heat — the Sahel, the Kalahari margins, the Egyptian interior — is exactly where evaporative cooling performs best: air with low humidity absorbs moisture readily, so each litre of water removes a lot of heat. Coastal and humid-forest zones are harder, and there the humidity-linked controller matters most, because adding moisture to saturated air helps nobody.

Borehole water: the issue nobody plans for

Most sheds in this market run on borehole or stored water, often hard, sometimes high in iron and silt. Fine nozzles will block, and the complaint becomes "the system stopped working" three weeks after installation. Our systems include a 5 μm inlet filter as standard, and we ask for a description of your water at enquiry stage so the filtration (and, where needed, pre-treatment) is specified before the order rather than after the failure.

Power, generators and zoning

Where power is intermittent, the pump load matters: these systems draw 1.5–7.5 kW depending on size, which is manageable for a typical site generator, and zoning lets you run the houses that need cooling without loading the whole system at once. Available voltage should be confirmed at order stage (220 V single phase or 380 V three phase) so the panel is built correctly.

Questions

Common questions — Africa

How much cooling is realistic in an African summer?

In dry inland conditions the published working figure is 5–10 °C reduction in perceived temperature in the treated zone, concentrated in the afternoon peak. In humid coastal conditions expect less, and we will say so before you order.

Will it keep the litter dry?

At 1–15 μm droplets evaporate in the air rather than landing on the floor, so litter stays dry — provided the layout is right. Coarse spray is the usual cause of wet litter and the problems that follow.

Can one system serve several houses?

Yes, with solenoid zoning. Each house runs its own schedule and water is only drawn by the houses that are misting, which keeps consumption predictable.
