Humidity control

Heat stress in livestock: cooling options compared

Heat stress shows up in the milk tank, the feed conversion figure and the mortality line. Cooling the air is usually cheaper than treating the consequences.

The three cooling methods, honestly compared

Each has a place; the mistake is treating them as interchangeable.

  • Fans: move air across animals. Cost-effective, but air movement alone stops helping as air temperature approaches body temperature.
  • Sprinklers and soakers: wet the animal. Effective for cattle, but water use is high and bedding and floors become wet — which brings hoof and hygiene problems.
  • High-pressure fogging: cools the air with 1–15 μm droplets that evaporate before landing. Low water use, drier floors, and it works in the holding areas where fans alone fall short.

Where fogging fits best

Fogging earns its place in specific zones rather than whole buildings:

  • Milking holding pens, where cattle stand crowded and cannot be moved
  • Pig finishing and farrowing areas where wet floors cause problems
  • Feed and loafing areas under shade structures
  • Along with tunnel ventilation, fogging in the intake path

Specifying it properly

Water quality matters more than most buyers expect: hard or iron-bearing water blocks fine nozzles quickly, so we specify the inlet filtration (5 μm) and a cleaning interval with the system. Control is temperature and humidity linked, because adding moisture in already-humid weather does nothing for the animals. The quotation states nozzle count, zoning, consumption (published 3–8 L/min) and the maintenance schedule.

Questions

Common questions — Humidity control

Does fogging replace fans?

No, and it is not meant to. Fans move air; fogging cools it. The combination — fog introduced into moving air — is what performs best in hot, dry conditions.

Will the bedding stay dry?

That is the point of the fine droplet size: 1–15 μm evaporates before it settles. Coarse spray systems are the ones that wet bedding.

How is it controlled?

Temperature and humidity-linked controllers with multi-zone output, so each building or shed runs to its own conditions and backs off automatically when humidity is high.
