Europe

Cooling livestock through European heatwaves

European summers now deliver the conditions that used to be exceptional. Housing designed for 30 °C is being asked to perform at 38 °C, and the loss shows up in yield, fertility and mortality.

The three cooling methods, honestly compared

Each has a place in European housing — the mistake is using one for a job it does not do.

  • Fans: move air across animals, cheap and familiar, but they stop helping as air temperature approaches body temperature.
  • Sprinklers and soakers: wet the animal; effective for cattle, but water use is high and bedding, floors and hooves pay for it.
  • High-pressure fogging: cools the air with droplets that evaporate before landing. Low water use, drier floors, and it works in holding areas where fans alone fall short.

Where fogging fits in a European building

In practice we specify it for specific zones rather than whole buildings:

  • Milking holding pens, where cows stand crowded and cannot be moved
  • Pig finishing and farrowing areas where wet floors cause problems
  • Poultry houses, fogging into the incoming air path rather than over the birds
  • Feed and loafing areas under shade structures

Humidity is the control variable here

European heatwaves are often humid, and adding moisture to saturated air does nothing for the animals. Our controllers read temperature and humidity and throttle back as humidity rises — this is why humidity-linked control is part of the specification rather than an upgrade. Water quality also matters more than most buyers expect: hard or iron-bearing water blocks fine nozzles, so inlet filtration (5 μm) and a cleaning interval are specified with every system.

Published specifications

Droplet size1–15 μm (no wet bedding)
Working pressure70–100 bar
Unit power1.5–7.5 kW
Coverage500–10,000 m² per system
Water consumption3–8 L/min
Controltemperature & humidity linked, multi-zone

Figures are our published specification ranges (or general market conditions where stated). Final configuration is confirmed per project in the written quotation.

Questions

Common questions — Europe

Will fogging wet the bedding?

Not at 1–15 μm, which evaporates in the air. Wet bedding is a sign of coarse spray or misdirected nozzles, and it is the failure mode we design against.

Does the water need treating?

It needs filtering. A 5 μm inlet filter is standard; where water is very hard we recommend pre-treatment, and we will say so before you order rather than after the nozzles block.

Can it serve several buildings from one pump?

Yes, with solenoid zoning: each building runs its own schedule and only the buildings that are misting draw water.
